In late July, WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) elevated UV tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category: “carcinogenic to humans.” Previously, the same group categorized use of artificial tanning devices as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
A study published in British medical journal Lancet Oncology cited an increase in the risk of melanoma by 75 percent among adults who started using artificial tanning devices before they turned 30.
Despite such risks, business is booming in the tanning bed industry. Revenue has almost doubled since 2006 from $2 billion to $5 billion a year in the United States alone, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, which estimates that as many as 30 million people tan themselves indoors each year.
Living in a society where you can never have skin that is tan enough, teeth that are white enough or breasts that are large enough can be a formidable challenge for insecure young women who think if they look like a Barbie doll, they will attract a handsome husband like Ken and live happily ever after.
